August 2009

August 1 - john wants to review the work he has done on his latest painting:

"Come On, Grandpa"

First he did three pencil drawings. Here they are:

He thought that he was close enough to begin the compositional part of the painting. Here is the first try:

He felt the boy was too old in comparison to what he wanted, so he painted him out , and replaced him with a younger version. Also he put the windmill in the background as shown below:

Next he has proportioned the boy's head better, moved the windmill closer, repositioned the handle on the basket, removed the mountain from the left side of the painting, and replaced it with the sea (for better balance of the painting). Also, he started painting the dock lighter and in more detail.

john still isn't pleased with the painting. He actually likes the last pencil composition better, but he is getting closer to "getting it right", and will keep working on it. One reason the boy isn't painted the same as the pencil drawing is that john was concerned that he was giving the boy an American look rather than a Greek one. The boy in the drawing looks like a young Tom Sawyer. Also, he still isn't pleased with the placement of the windmill. But, the windmill isn't the story, so it will probably stay "back there".

August 1 - john's brother just found this card from john to his parents written by john during his first week in Alaska in December 1963. john would like to share it with you. This card was written before john was in the March 1964 "Good Friday" earthquake measuring 9.2 for 7 minutes.

john's brother also found a telegraph message sent to john's folks right after the March 27th earthquake. Please note that the misspelling of "personal". That was not john's fault, but resulted from a verbal error.

This message originated from the war room at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage Alaska and was verbally sent to the Pentagon in Washington D.C.. It was then sent by the Pentagon to the Red Cross in Kansas City Missouri where john's parents received a phone call and subsequently the telegraph.

August 5 - Here is the latest work on john's painting of . It is still in the pre-ugly stage:

August 11 -

August 21 - the Greek fisherman will be tending his nets (not painted in yet). john has been working on feet and legs. The dock around these will be repainted. The painting still is in the pre-ugly stage, but is making headway towards just plain ugly.

August 28 - john had a painting class this morning, and he made headway on the painting. He declares the painting to now be in the "just ugly" stage:
