February 2008

February 6 - Here's the acrylic painting john is currently working on. If you go to the art gallery, you will find a pen and ink drawing of the same lighthouse. For some reason, this photo doesn't show the lighthouse light properly. It isn't showing the details of the fresnel lens, which john has painted into the painting.

For a very clear understanding of how a fresnel lens works, click on the following:

February 11 - john and joyce went to St. Louis over the weekend. They visited the Marianist Galleries while there. It is a MUST SEE whenever you visit St. Louis. Actually, it is located in Kirkwood, MO, a suburb of St. Louis.

Kirkwood was in shock from the shooting at their City Hall where 6 people were killed and the Mayor was critically injured with two bullets in his brain. Since it was on the national news, you probably know about it.

But, back to a lighter note - john and joyce have never seen so much creativity in one spot as they saw at the Marianist Galleries. This creativity comes from mainly from Brother Mel Meyer, who has been a member of the Marianist Society for 60 years. The website to visit is: www.melsmart.com. The visit to the Gallery was a "WOW" experience!

February 11 (PM) - The New Theatre Guild is hosting it's annual "Valentine Love Affair" dinner/dance at the Marriott Hotel this Thursday evening. It is a stunningly beautiful event. The owners of the New Theatre have put in $80,000 in decorations over the last two years, so it may be the loveliest evening in the Greater Kansas City area. Proceeds of the evening go toward providing scholarships for theatre students.

There will be a silent auction as part of the event. Fred Broski donates an original oil painting each year. This year he has painted "A Pair of Bears". It is roughly 3' x 4' in size. Art Charlesworth has donated a golden frame and mat for the painting (not shown here). Here is a photo of Fred's painting:

February 17 - john turned off the flourescent lamp over the painting before photographing it. This is a somewhat more accurate rendition of the painting, and shows where the painting is as of today.
