May 2004

May 4 - Last week a turkey flew into zenpond. john can add this to the list of visitors to zenpond. She flew in behind the small waterfall and ran down the path to the corner of the garden and then disappeared.

joyce has bought out the Wal-Mart garden center this year and has been planting flowers in pots. She has had luck with zinnas, lantana and salvia. john likes the Japanese Painted ferns and Silver Mound alot.

john has taken some pictures of the new small waterfall and the work being done on the big waterfall. This waterfall used to be about ten feet tall. It is quickly becoming a fifteen feet waterfall! He will post these pictures shortly.

May 11 - The reason there has been no entries to this journal since May 4 is that there has been a lot going on at zenpond! john asked Con-Spray to gunite the "large" waterfall. It has gone from 10 feet to 18 feet or more. Here is the EXCELLENT crew from Con-Spray signing their work after a 12 hour day (without break):

They are:

Jose G. Zapata, Loren K. Rentschler, Mike E. Shelley, Jeremy Gray, Mike Ewalt, and Matt Hutson. What a team from Con-Spray in Olathe Kansas! If you need to have concrete work done request this team!!! More pictures to follow very shortly.

May 12 - It is a rainy day today, so john can catch up on the virtual zenpond. Here are some more pictures of the excellent team being craftsmen/artists:
And now for the final results ...
john recently rebuilt the small waterfall too. The old one consisted of a stack of vertical rocks with 4000 gallons/hour of water flowing from the top. john had put the 45 mil liner under this stack of rocks. When john tore down this stack, he found a 12 inch hole in the liner at the bottom. He realized that he had put 4000 pounds of rock on the liner and that the liner couldn't handle that load. When he rebuilt the new falls, he first put 100 concrete blocks as a sub-base and then put the liner on top of that. Now there is only, at most, 70 pounds on the liner at any spot. Much better. In addition, john has studied what makes a waterfall look natural. Certainly just placing rocks vertically didn't do the trick. Here is a picture of the result. You can still see the concrete blocks on the left side. john has about another week to finish up this project.
