October 2000

October 1 - john noted a pixelated cloud of birds randomly heading south this morning. It was as if the bottoms of their wings were flashing some secret code as they glided above zenpond. Surely this will signal a return of the Mallards to the pond within the next few days. Here are some pictures taken this morning.

Small waterfall
The grafted weeping willow and fish fountain. Since the willow is grafted onto another type of trunk, the roots do not seek out and clog the bottom drains in the pond.
Fish fountain and water lilies, the home of numerous frogs.
The lower retaining wall behind the large waterfall and the trench for the gravel base of the upper wall, which will be built tomorrow. Each one of these blocks are 85 pounds a piece.
Hosta, Silver Mound and Mums next to large waterfall.
john put netting over the small pond to keep out leaves. john has mentioned in past how the pond can choke up with leaves and the pump filters can clog so often that he can't keep the stream or waterfall running. Now john has to put in a word of caution about netting. Small pond creatures too often get caught in the net. john is removing it and will just clean the pond each Spring.

john caught the fish fountain in early light. john says he can see why Monet painted blue water lilies. If you want to see what Monet might have painted, click below:

Koi are tame and will eat out of john's hand.
More Koi coming in for a bread stack.
Early morning sun coming through the leaves of a Bradford Pear.
john wants to remind everyone that the guestbook is still broken after the move from one host server to another. Hopefully, john will finally figure out what broke soon.
